NURSE PRACTITIONER FAQ

A Primary Care Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse with specialized education and skills who is capable of working either independently or collaboratively in many health care settings. As part of their scope of practice, NP’s initiate treatments, diagnose diseases, disorders, and conditions, prescribe medications, and order lab tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic tests.
A nurse practitioner works collaboratively with other health-care providers. The nurses are members of an interdisciplinary team that includes physicians, physiotherapists, and other health professionals Even if you are seeing an NP, you can still see your family doctor. As an alternative to a family physician, you can also see a Nurse Practitioner.
Your health will be evaluated during a health exam. An examination includes a review of your medical history, measurements of vital signs, a physical examination, and possibly laboratory tests as well. Additionally, your healthcare provider may offer preventive health recommendations based on your lifestyle factors.
Several factors determine how often you should have a health examination, including your age, your medical history, and your risk factors for certain diseases. At least once a year, adults should undergo a health examination. Those with chronic conditions or specific health concerns may need more frequent evaluations. Depending on your individual circumstances, consult your healthcare provider about the appropriate schedule for your health exams.
Call 911 for unexplained sudden illness or go to the nearest urgent care. In our virtual walk in clinic based on medical need, we offer same-day or next-day appointments. We will triage you and do our best to address your urgent health concern that same day either in person or through a virtual visit (telephone or video).
For your convenience, we offer telephone consultations and video visits. You may be able to consult with our clinical team via video visit or telephone consultation depending on your health concern. It can be arranged if this is your preferred method. We also offer in-person appointments.
Most primary care services have traditionally been provided by physicians, but many Ontarians are unable to find a family doctor. Ontario has created Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics to meet this demand. Nurse Practitioners (NP’s) are able to assess, diagnose, and treat medical conditions in these clinics using an evidence-based approach. clinical team via video visit or telephone consultation depending on your health concern.
